“Mord och mandeldoft”” is a collection of short stories written in 2007 by Camilla Lackberg and published in October 2015 by Marsilio Editore.
The talent of a writer is often shown by the ability to excite the reader with a few incisive lines. Writing a story is not easy and in many cases their collection does not have the commercial success of a novel.
But if the writer in question is called Camilla Läckberg then many of the initial doubts are swept away. This collection of stories are probably an early work of Swedish author, but also you can see in these writings his talent and narrative power to keep the reader glued to read.
Four short stories and the fifth that is longer, from which it takes its title of the collection, are linked by a delicate style, melancholy and gloomy but do not make the rather laborious reading agile, fast and relentless.
Five stories in which the author skillfully sweep the nuances and contradictions of the human soul and how a person subjected to an injustice, psychological violence can also react in a violent way in order to get back the freedom or a desperate happiness.
If in the first account “Dreaming Elisabeth” the reader is shocked and participant of how love can lead to a mad and tragic drama. But in the second and, in my opinion, the most successful story “The Coffee of the Widows” the reader agrees with and supports the silent and ruthless rebellion of women forced to undergo, for years, violence and abuse by their husbands. Reading this text you can not but think that perhaps “too much coffee can really kill you.”
Camilla Läckberg, in the other three stories almost sociological – introspective, shows us how even in civil Sweden is present the difficult problem of bullying in school and the family is not at all the love and support model but a place where envy , jealousy and greed above all can also lead to accomplish heinous murders.
A collection of stories which has the merit to be read in a short time and with interest about an agile narrative structure, an effective pace and the charm guaranteeing an intense and compelling narrative pathos.
Camilla Läckberg confirms a writer with an acute and profound sensitivity as well as talented able to use their creativity in a different and always original.
