“Perdersi, Still Alice” è un libro scritto e auto pubblicato nel 2007 da Lisa Genova e successivamente pubblicato anche in Italia nel 2013 da Piemme Edizioni. Da questo libro è stato tratto il film “Still Alice” con Julianne Moore che le è valso quest’anno il premio Oscar come miglior Attrice.
Cosa saremmo senza i nostri ricordi? L’uomo senza la propria esperienza e memoria non potrebbe mai migliorare né progredire evitando di commettere sempre gli stessi errori.
L’intelligenza ci differenza dagli animali e la nostra mente nello stesso tempo un ingranaggio perfetto e qualcosa di estremamente delicato e fragile. Basta poco perché il precario meccanismo che lo fa muovere si rompa.
Esistono varie malattie di cui sia l’ uomo che la donna possono essere vittime contro le quali la medicina cerca una cura o quanto meno di tenere sotto controllo.
Eppure nonostante il progresso scientifico e le quotidiane scoperte su alcune di esse siamo impotenti.
Se il cancro ci devasta il corpo riducendoci alla fine pelle e ossa come larve, il Morbo di Alzheimer devasta in maniera inesorabile anche la nostra mente.
Sappiamo poco di questa malattia che normalmente aggredisce gli anziani, ma sempre più spesso anche i più giovani.
L’Alzheimer non fa prigionieri non esistendo alcuna cura per arrestarla, ma solo dei blandi palliativi.
Chi ne viene colpito come nel caso di Alice Howland, protagonista della nostra storia, è costretto a stravolgere la propria vita e quella dei propri familiari.
Alice è una brillante e bella professoressa di psicologia cognitiva ad Harvard, ha appena cinquant’anni , un marito devoto come John e tre bei figli: Tom, Anna e Lydia.
Lavora, studia, viaggia svolgendo una vita ricca e intensa quando un giorno mentre sta tenendo un discorso durante un convegno improvvisamente le sfuggono delle parole.
Una strana sensazione la avvolge, anche se all’inizio addebita il tutto allo stress, ma quando nei giorni successivi altri casi si manifestano come sentirsi smarrita mentre sta correndo nell’abituale circuito o vampate di calore, non può esimersi nel fare più accurati esami.
Il responso è senz’appello: Morbo di Alzheimer precoce .Una forma rara che colpisce con egual misura è che soprattutto ereditaria e degenerativa. Una spada di Damocle che si abbatte anche su suoi figli creando nella donna, se possibile, ancora più dolore e angoscia.
Il malato di Alzheimer perde lentamente ogni forma d autonomia e indipendenza, diventando balia di se stesso e della sua mente. Alice lotta con tutta se stessa per rimanere ancorata alla sua identità e al ricordo della donna che è stata. Si impegna a scrivere, studiare, si sforza di continuare ad avere una vita normale,ma sarà tutto inutile.
John e i figli si stringono intorno alla donna assistendo impotenti alla sua “morte sociale” e di come la malattia le priva di godersi le gioie di diventare anche nonna.
Alice non vorrebbe essere un peso per la sua famiglia e soprattutto desidera mantenere la propria dignità cosi decide di elaborare una sua personale uscita di scena prima che il morbo glielo impedisca.
Lisa Genova con uno stile asciutto, semplice porta il lettore dentro la testa e soprattutto il cuore della protagonista accompagnandola nel suo viaggio senza ritorno non potendo non provare empatia condividendone i sentimenti di dolore, sconforto e rabbiosa rassegnazione.
Il Morbo di Alzheimer priva la persona di ogni cosa e lo fa precipitare nel buio esistenziale dove non c’è più spazio per i sentimenti,ma Alice nonostante sia prossima a cadere nel burrone, nel bellissimo e toccante finale ascoltando e vedendo recitare la figlia Lydia ,le sorride facendolo capire che ancora dentro di sé c’è amore e soprattutto nè conosce appieno il valore oltre che il significato.

The intelligence we difference from the animals and our minds at the same time a perfect gear and something extremely delicate and fragile. Very little is needed because the precarious mechanism that moves it breaks.
There are several diseases which is the ‘man and the woman are victims against which the medicine seeks a cure or at least to control.
Yet despite the progress of science and the daily discoveries of some of them we are powerless.
If cancer we devastates the body and reduces us to the end of skin and bones, as larvae, Alzheimer’s disease devastates inexorably also our mind.
We know little about this disease that usually attacks the elderly, but increasingly also the youngest.
Alzheimer’s takes no prisoners as there is no cure for arrest, but only mild palliatives.
Those who are affected as in the case of Alice Howland, the protagonist of our story, is forced to disrupt their lives and that of their family.
Alice is a beautiful and brilliant professor of cognitive psychology at Harvard, just fifty years, as a devoted husband John and three beautiful children: Tom, Anna and Lydia.
He is working, studying, traveling serving a life rich and intense when one day while he is giving a speech during a conference suddenly beyond words.
A strange feeling wraps, although at charging for all the stress, but when in the following days other cases manifest as feeling lost while he is running in the usual circuit or hot flashes, can not refuse to perform more thorough examinations.
The verdict is without appeal: Alzheimer’s early .A rare form that strikes with equal measure is mainly hereditary and degenerative. A sword of Damocles, which struck even on his children by creating the woman, if possible, even more pain and anguish.
People with Alzheimer’s slowly losing all forms of autonomy and independence, becoming fend for himself and his mind. Alice struggles with all of herself to remain anchored to its identity and to remember the woman who was. He agrees to write, study, strives to continue to have a normal life, but it will be useless .
John and children huddle around the woman watching helplessly as his “social death” and as the disease robs them of enjoying the joys of becoming even grandmother.
Alice would not want to be a burden to his family and especially want to keep their dignity so he decided to develop his personal left the scene before the disease prevents him.
Lisa Genova with a dry style, simply takes the reader inside the head and especially the heart of the protagonist accompanying her on her journey of no return and could not have empathy, sharing the feelings of pain, despair and angry resignation.
Alzheimer’s disease deprives the person of everything and it does fall into the darkness of existence where there is no room for sentiment, but Alice despite being next to fall into the ravine, in the beautiful and touching final hearing and seeing recite the daughter Lydia , she smiles making it understand that there is still inside her love and above all neither knows the full value as well as the meaning.
