Amore, morte e tradizione sono i tre temi portanti di questo film d’animazione che porta lo spettatore in Messico, centro di tutto, dove fa la conoscenza di tre ragazzi: Manolo, Maria e Joaquin uniti da forte amicizia. Manolo e Joaquin amano Maria e sognano vite diverse da quelle imposte da rispettivi padri. Manolo vorrebbe suonare la sua amata chitarra e invece la tradizione di famiglia lo spinge a diventare un torero. Un torero “animalista” perché si rifiuta di uccidere i tori, Joaquin è invece chiamato ad essere l’eroe della città come fu un tempo suo padre. Maria è mandata dal padre in Spagna a studiare per diventare poi un giorno una promessa sposa per qualche ricco signore.
Tre destini che suscitano la curiosità della Muerte Regina delle Anime Ricordate e di Xibalba suo Sposo- Rivale, Signore del Regno delle Anime Dimenticate , pronti a scommettere i rispettivi regni su chi tra i due ragazzi riuscirà a sposare la bella Maria.
