Tutti noi sogniamo l’eternità. Tutti bramano un posto nei libri di storia. Tutti cercano la popolarità e l’affermazione personale. Siamo un po’ tutti vanesi e i politici se possibile anche di più.
Nessun politico si rassegna con facilità a perdere il potere una volta ottenuto.
Un leader politico pur di rimanere attaccato alla poltrona sarebbe disposto a tutto.
Alzi la mano chi pensa che un politico italiano possa rassegnare le dimissioni per spirito di patria e decoro e non perché travolto dagli scandali e dai propri enormi e imbarazzanti scheletri nell’armadio.
Francois Urquhart è ormai al potere da dieci anni e punta ad essere il premier più longevo della storia dell’Inghilterra. Vuole superare e oscurare la leggenda di Margaret Thatcher e come sempre per ottenere il suo scopo non esita a bramare nell’ombra, a manipolare e usare il potere e le istituzioni a suo piacimento.
Muove come marionette i suoi ministri, fa e disfa governi per tenere sulla corda amici e nemici. Eppure i vecchio stratega è stanco, logoro, sente il peso di tante battaglie e di tanti anni di dominio incontrastato che lo hanno portato a farsi tanti nemici all’interno del partito.
Se Urquhart si sforza di guardare ancora al futuro, deve però guardarsi dal suo passato nelle forme di Cipro all’epoca conflitto cipriotta-inglese degli anni 50 in cui non mancò di mostrare già allora da giovane ufficiale cinismo e abilità politica al punto di compiere gravi atti criminali pur di ottenere successo e prestigio.
In questo terzo e ultimo libro della serie Michael Dobbs ancora una volta porta il lettore per mano nel dietro le quinte delle istituzioni inglesi mostrandoci senza censura e crudezza come pensano e come agiscano i politici mossi dall’avidità e dal desiderio di primeggiare.
Il lettore segue così due storie apparentemente divise e separate come la crisi internazionale e diplomatica cipriota dove da secoli tra greci e turchi per ottenere il dominio dell’isola e dall’altra le manovre , gli inganni,le alleanze che si creano in Parlamento e soprattutto nella sfida creatasi tra lo stesso Urquhart e il suo ex ministro degli Esteri Makepeace idealista e pura, determinato porre fine al suo “regno” creando dal nulla un terzo partito tra conservatori e laburisti.
Un romanzo politico che diventa anche spy story e in qualche modo una versione moderna del Giulio Cesare di shakespeariana memoria, in cui Bruto e i congiurati sono, loro malgrado, attori non protagonisti della storia.
Perche il nostro “Urquhart Giulio Cesare” non intende mollare e abdicare così facilmente e fino al’ultimo nonostante la sconfitta imminente da prova del suo diabolico talento politico e capacità di leader carismatico.
Dobbs incanta e inchioda il lettore alla lettura per tutto il corso del romanzo facendogli trattenere il respiro e tenendo alta e costante l’attenzione e l’interesse riuscendo con maestria a rendere la politica qualcosa di intenso e vibrante.
Uno stile secco, diretto, lineare che non può non essere definito ormai un marchio di fabbrica dell’autore che rende il lettore nello stesso tempo osservatore e cospiratore delle vicende tramite occhi del nostro Francois.
Il finale è nello stesso tempo: melanconico, decadente e drammatico riuscendo a spiazzare e commuovere il lettore con la forza di un personaggio di Francois Urquhart che, sebbene non sia assolutamente un eroe positivo , riesce a catturare l’attenzione di tutti e soprattutto facendolo rimpiangere, come se invece lo fosse davvero.

No politician resigned easy to lose power once obtained.
A political leader in order to remain attached to the chair would be willing to do anything.
Hands up those who think that an Italian politician to resign for national pride and dignity and not because it engulfed by scandals and by its huge and embarrassing skeletons in the closet.
Francois Urquhart is now in power for ten years and aims to be the longest-serving prime minister in the history of England. He wants to overcome and obscure the legend of Margaret Thatcher and as always to achieve its purpose does not hesitate to long shadows, to manipulate and use the power and institutions at will.
Moves like puppets his ministers, makes and breaks governments to hold on the rope friends and enemies. Yet the old strategist is tired, worn out, he feels the weight of so many battles and many years of unchallenged rule that led him to make many enemies within the party.

The reader follows two stories seem so divided and separated as the international crisis and diplomatic Cyprus where for centuries between Greeks and Turks to gain control of the island and other maneuvers, the deceptions, the alliances that are created in Parliament and especially in the challenge created between the same Urquhart and his former foreign minister Makepeace idealistic and pure, determined to end his “kingdom” creating from nothing a third party between Conservatives and Labour.
A political novel that becomes even spy story and somehow a modern version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in which Brutus and the conspirators are, despite themselves, supporting actors in history.
Because our “Urquhart Julius Caesar” does not intend to give up so easily and up and abdicate AM on the last despite the imminent defeat as proof of his diabolical political talent and ability of the charismatic leader.
Dobbs enchants and nails the reader to read throughout the course of the novel, making him hold his breath and holding high and constant attention and interest in succeeding with mastery to make the policy something intense and vibrant.
A dry style, direct, linear and can not be defined now a trademark of the author makes the reader at the same time observer and conspirator of the events through the eyes of our Francois.
The finish is at the same time: melancholic, decadent and dramatic managing to displace and move the reader with the strength of a character of Francois Urquhart that, although it is not absolutely a positive hero, manages to capture the attention of everyone and especially doing regret , as if instead it were real.
